New Editors Appointed To Bring Shin Min and Wanbao to new heights!

Revamped Wanbao to give readers a refreshing daily evening read

Singapore, 15 September 2007 - Singapore Press Holdings’ (SPH) Chinese Newspaper Division announced today that one of its Chinese dailies, Lianhe Wanbao, will undergo a revamp and enhancement to better cater to its readers. Lianhe Wanbao (Wanbao) and another SPH Chinese daily, Shin Min Daily News (Shin Min), will also see new editors appointed.

Shin Min, launched in 1967, will continue to provide readers with reports on human-interest stories, community, family issues, health matters, entertainment scoops and sports. The popular Chinese newspaper will focus on developing its current core readership, i.e. the adult reader market as well as the newly emerging and increasingly affluent matured reader segment. The existing Editor of Wanbao, Mr Koh Lin Hoe, will take over as the new Editor of Shin Min.

Wanbao will witness a revamp to target a younger group of readers, while strengthening the support of its core group of adult readers. Its layout will undergo a facelift, and its content will be aimed at attracting young readers, including the young professionals and executives. The entertainment section will be one of the new anchors in the revamped WB, along with "sportstainment" and bite-size commentaries to provide insights to readers.

Mr Peter Ong, who is currently Fukan(zbNow) Editor, Lianhe Zaobao, and News Editor of zbSunday, will be Acting Editor of the revamped Wanbao. The new Wanbao will hit the newsstands on 15 Oct 2007.

Both papers will maintain their character as daily Chinese newspapers that report on human-interest stories that touch the hearts of Singaporeans.

The two papers’ respective local news desks will continue to provide their own readers with news that are of top concern to them and closest to their hearts, each in their own unique view points to the issues reported.

A new Central Integrated Newsroom (CIN) will service both newspapers on entertainment, sports, business and international news. This will allow each newspaper to develop and strengthen its own news coverage with unique perspectives that brings improved reading experience.

The central integrated newsroom will be led by current Shin Min Editor, Mr Toh Lam Huat. As Supervising Editor - overseeing Wanbao, Shin Min and CIN, he will play a key role mapping out the direction of the two newspapers.

All three appointments will take place with effect from 1 Oct 2007.

The announcements were made during Shin Min´s 40th Anniversary celebrations by Mr Robin Hu, Executive Vice President of SPH´s Chinese Newspaper Division and Newspaper Services. The event, which saw the launch of two books, Shin Min´s 40th Anniversary Commemorative Book “Refresh” <<重新发现>>, and “The Bosses” <<创业家>>, was held at Singapore Press Holdings´ News Centre Auditorium. Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister, Prime Minister´s Office and Secretary-General of National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), was the Guest-of-Honour.

Mr Hu said: "Between 1997 and 2006, Chinese literate Singaporean grew from 1.52 million to 2.01 million, an increase of almost 500,000 people. This is a tremendous opportunity for us. By differentiating Shin Min and Wan Bao to meet the aspirations of increasingly discerning readers, we can serve our readers much better."
