Singapore, 15 August 2008 – Singapore´s second-most bought English daily is renewing its look and feel to mark its 20th anniversary this year.
The New Paper, with a readership of 531,000 (Nielsen Media Research, 2007 Media Index), will unveil a dramatically different design on 17 Aug 2008 in The New Paper on Sunday, while the revamped weekday edition will hit the streets the next day.
The daily has a younger adult readership than all the other English newspapers – with a median age of 33 (Nielsen Media Research, 2007 Media Index). This has prompted the team to opt for a bright and bold approach to the redesign of the paper.
Executive editor Ken Jalleh Jr said: “TNP is about vibrancy in the way we show the news. It is about creativity in striving to surprise, daily, in the way we present the news. And it is about being different in an increasingly crowded, cookie-cutter market.”
Every part of the paper, including the masthead, fonts, colour palette and design architecture, is being refreshed. But the title will remain the same and the iconic tick on Page One will live on. The covers of the weekday, Sunday and sports noon edition will each now distinguish themselves with a subtly different look.
The changes have one big goal in mind: To deliver news more effectively – in ways that are easier and quicker to grasp in a time-starved world.
Over the years, The New Paper has gone from being an afternoon paper into a hybrid morning and afternoon product. It has grown from one to four products – the weekday edition launched in 1988, the website launched in 1995, the Sunday edition born in 1999, and the sports noon edition available on Mondays and Thursdays from last year.
Editor Ivan Fernandez said: “We were a true blue tabloid in the early days, though some might say it was downright yellow once. But the new kid on the block has grown up.”
“Our journalists were in the thick of the action during the Iraq war, Afghanistan war, Jakarta riots and the Asian tsunami. At home, we´ve evolved a kinder form of journalism often referred to as human-interest stories.”
At regional competitions, the paper won The Scoop Award and Best in (feature) Photography at the annual Society of Publishers in Asia (Sopa) Awards in 2006. It has also won newspaper infographics awards from IFRA (a regional association of media) for three years consecutively: Spiderman 3 poster, Making of Singapore Flyer and Star Wars package.
The New Paper is also known for its popular mass events. It entered the Guinness Book of Records when its Big Walk event in 2000 drew 77,500 people in a competitive and fun walk.
Said Mr Fernandez: “The paper´s brand of purposeful and lively journalism, the essence of The New Paper, or what we call our DNA, has evolved over the years. The brash young kid is now ‘streetwise´. And this is what we´re celebrating as we turn 20 this year.”
He added: “As a paid paper that has always connected with people on the move, we can lay claim to knowing the streets better – so our readers can know more.”
Singapore news has always been the focus of the paper and TNP’s journalists feel as much at home on Orchard Road and Esplanade Drive as they do on Bishan Road and Geylang Road.
And in the words of Tan Ooi Boon, who is the Projects and Weekend News editor, “TNP continues to grow, but it refuses to grow old.”
