Acclaimed acrobatic drama “Journey to the West” comes to Singapore

Singapore, 30 April 2009 - “Journey to the West”, one of China’s greatest literary classics, will be brought to life in an acrobatic drama to be performed in Singapore for the first time.

“Journey to the West”, jointly presented by Lianhe Zaobao and Scorpio East Productions, will premiere at the Esplanade Theatre from 16 to 19 July, 2009.

Performed by an 80-strong cast from the renowned Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe of China, this production boasts visually-breathtaking sets and showcases a variety of acrobatic forms. From dance, martial arts to puppetry, this adaptation of the much-loved Chinese classic, which has charmed audiences around the world, is a must-see for the young and old.

The Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe of China has won over 80 awards at domestic and international show competitions. Founded in 1957, the troupe has carried on the traditional art of acrobatics while incorporating other art forms including dance, artistic gymnastics and drama to create its own unique style.

"Journey to the West" has been well-received by both critics and audiences when it toured China. Some of its accolades include the first prize at the Acrobatic Theme Show Competition in 2006, 12th Wenhua Grand Prize at the 8th China Arts Festival presented by the Ministry of Culture (China) and Gold Medal at the 7th China Acrobatic Gold Chrysanthemum Award in 2008. It has also enjoyed a successful tour of Beijing, Wuhai (Inner Mongolia), Hongkong and Germany.

"Journey to the West" tells the adventures of a 7th century monk Xuanzang who travels to India in search of Buddhist sutras with his three disciples, led by the irreverent but capable Monkey King "Sun Wukong", together with Pigsy and Sandy.

Largely based on the original classic tale, the acrobatic drama has five acts including Storm in the Heavenly Palace, Three Attacks against the White-Bone Demon, the Kingdom of the Spider Demon, Flaming Mountain and the Epilogue.

We are confident that the performance will be a visual treat for the audience.”
