Nokia chooses ST as news source for new smart phone

Singapore, 15 June 2009 - The Straits Times is now available on Nokia's latest and long-awaited smart phone, the N97.

Launched one day before the opening of CommunicAsia 2009, Nokia hopes to rival Apple's new 3GS unveiled last week with its new touchscreen N97.

ST's custom-designed widget, which allows users to read breaking news from the, will be pre-loaded in all Singapore N97 units.
This means users will not need to download the application separately from the Internet.

Nokia's Head of APAC Developer Relations and Marketing Kenny Mathers said it chose The Straits Times as the news source of its choice because of its comprehensive and relevant coverage for local mobile users.

He said: "Building a vibrant ecosystem with content providers and third-party developers is a key focus area for Nokia to bring exciting applications and content to consumers. Nokia is excited to partner with The Straits Times, Singapore's most widely-read English daily, to deliver the latest news content into the hands of Nokia users via the Ovi Store."

This is the first time is available on the Symbian operating system and will be available in future for download at Nokia's Ovi Store online for other touchscreen phones like the N5800.

The breaking news was first launched free on Apple's iPhone Application store in January 2009. Since then, it has seen exponential growth and enjoyed significant time as Singapore's most downloaded application. SPH's web TV site, RazorTV, is also available for free at the iTunes Application stores.

The currently attracts more than 23 million page views every month - both on the Internet and mobile devices.

The offers a free breaking news site which is available on the iPhone and the Nokia N97. The ST Digital site remains a subscription-only site, and is not yet available on mobile platforms.
