Singapore, 6 August 2009 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), Southeast Asia's leading media organisation, today announced the winners of SPH Ink Awards 2009 at an awards presentation ceremony attended by more than 300 guests from the advertising industry.
The award, in its fourth year, recognises and honours creative excellence in press advertising, as well as across integrated media campaigns.
Ogilvy & Mather Advertising emerged as the Grand Prix winner with their Life Before Death campaign for Lien Foundation, after intense judging by an independent panel of 11 judges comprising industry veterans. The campaign, published in The Straits Times and The Sunday Times, was praised by the judges for the dramatic use of copy-text to bring out the salient message of managing death.
Mr Anthony Kang, president of Dentsu Singapore and one of the judges, said:” A good press ad is one that catches your eye at first glance; usually it’s the headline or the visual. It makes you want to read on and discover what the key message is. The Lien Foundation ad, although very much copy-based, has such strong emotive appeal. The headline compels you to want to read the accompanying long body text.”
For being awarded the Grand Prix, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising won $10,000 cash, while Lien Foundation will receive a full-page full-colour ad space in one of SPH's flagship newspapers, The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao. Ogilvy and Mather Advertising also took home the Gold award in the Press Ad Campaign (English) category for the same campaign.
Mr Leslie Fong, Senior Executive Vice-President, Marketing Division of SPH, said: “The Life Before Death campaign by Ogilvy & Mather Advertising is proof of a successful press campaign. It showed that the agency truly understood their client's brief and delivered an impactful message in a creative way."
"The inaugural winners of the Integrated Campaign category are testament to how advertisers and agencies can use SPH's multimedia platforms, from print, online, radio to outdoor, to create campaigns that reach out to a wide but targeted audience.” added Mr Fong.
TBWA/Tequila Singapore also did well, winning top honours in the Press Ad Single (English) category for their advertisement for Soo Kee Jewellery, as well as winning the very first award for the newly added Integrated Campaign category for their client, Visa WorldWide Pte. Limited.
Response has been most encouraging, with a total of 43 advertising and media agencies and 54 advertisers participating in SPH Ink Awards 2009. Of the 275 entries, 31 were short-listed as finalists. All entries were published in SPH newspapers from June 2008 to July 2009.
On the success of SPH Ink Awards 2009, Mr Fong said: "As in previous years, the SPH Ink Awards 09 has attracted top quality entries. It is gratifying for us at SPH to be able to showcase the best talents of the creative and advertising industry”.
This year’s Readers’ Choice contest garnered close to 5,000 votes through sms and online voting. Three lucky readers who voted for the Lien Foundation ads won for themselves a Nokia 5730 handphone.
