Our History
SPH Media’s legacy can be traced back to 1845 with the first run of The Straits Times, an English daily.
Over time, SPH Media (SPH) expanded its news portfolio to serve Singapore’s multilingual society. Singapore’s only Tamil-language daily, Tamil Murasu, was founded in 1935 and became the voice for the local Tamil-speaking community. In 1957, Berita Harian was published in Kuala Lumpur, and the Singapore edition was established in 1965, becoming the nation’s only Malay newspaper. The Business Times was launched in 1976 as Singapore’s first financial daily to serve the growing demand for business and financial news. In 1983, Nanyang Siang Pau merged with Sin Chew Jit Poh to form Singapore News and Publications Limited, which produced Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao, serving the needs of our ethnic Chinese readers.
In 1984, Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH Limited) was incorporated in Singapore under the Companies Act as a public company, and published seven newspapers in three languages, including The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, The Business Times, Berita Harian, Shin Min Daily News, Lianhe Wanbao, and the Singapore Monitor. SPH Limited then acquired Hipro Printing, bringing Tamil Murasu into its stable of publications in 1995.
In 2021, SPH Limited was restructured, with its entire media-related business portfolio transferred to SPH Media Trust, a new Company Limited by Guarantee. SPH Media Limited was then established as the operating company of SPH Media Trust, focusing on the creation, curation and distribution of trusted news and content that informs, connects and inspires communities.
