The Straits Times kicked off its ST Podcasts Live! Series with a live recording of The Usual Place podcast as part of its 180th year celebrations. In collaboration with the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), the show posed the question: Can young people rejuvenate Singapore’s old buildings?
SLA chief executive Colin Low and Ng Wee Liang, a real estate university student who creates social media content on Singapore heritage joined the discussion with The Usual Place host Natasha Ann Zachariah.
More than 80 people — the majority of whom are millennials and Gen Zers — were present in the intimate setting at The Foundry in Prinsep Link.
Formerly the Elections Department Building, The Foundry was carefully selected as the perfect spot to discuss how Singapore’s old buildings can avoid fading into obscurity.

Reaching audiences across platforms: A clear win for ST Podcasts Live! partnership
In this collaboration, SLA had the opportunity to discuss a topic highly relevant to the organisation. During the show, Mr Low shared how buildings are not just physical structures.

He said: “They are opportunities waiting to be unlocked… (and are) a reflection of our collective history, our shared identity, what we were in the past, what we are today, what we will be, and our inspiration and foundation to what we can be in future.”
Mr Low also used lifestyle destination New Bahru as an example of how spaces could work to draw in crowds to visit more than once through experiences such as free events and pop-ups.
He also replied to questions posed by the audience during the Q&A segment, such as how redeveloped properties can be kept accessible to tenants.
The podcast was further amplified through the ST podcasts’ distribution channels on Omny Studio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube, with editorial articles published on The Straits Times.
