Legacy Meets Life: How The Straits Times Reimagined Its Role for a New Generation

For 180 years, The Straits Times (ST) has been a cornerstone of every household in Singapore as a trusted source of news, analysis, and perspective through every chapter of the nation's story.

But as the media landscape and audience expectations have evolved, legacy alone is no longer enough. Trust is no longer earned solely through reputation. It is built through relevance, accessibility, and the ability to show up in people's lives in ways that genuinely matter.

As it marked this major milestone, ST recognised that moving forward with the times required more than reporting the news. It required creating an ecosystem where audiences could not only consume content, but engage, interact, and see themselves reflected in it.

This gave rise to a clear and necessary ambition: to transform ST into a platform that connects with audiences across digital, physical, and community touchpoints, in ways that a traditional media model can no longer achieve.

The answer was Project ST180, a deliberate and wide-ranging transformation that moved ST from being seen as a newspaper to becoming a modern, community-centric platform built for a digital-first future. Rather than a simple rebrand or refresh, this was a genuine reimagining of how one of Singapore's most iconic institutions connects with its audiences across content, platforms, and real-world experiences.

ST180: Three Dimensions, One Direction

ST180 was built as a multi-dimensional transformation across three interconnected areas, each designed to reinforce the others and deliver a cohesive shift in how ST shows up for its audiences.

Reframing Content Through Community Storytelling

At the heart of the transformation was "Your Singapore Story", a content series that moved beyond headlines to focus on the texture of everyday Singaporean life. From kopi rituals to heartland stories, the series zoomed in on the small, human moments that rarely make front pages but define how people actually live.

Across 30 published stories, the series generated:

  • 48.6 million impressions
  • 43 million video views
  • 7.7 million engagements

The results proved that storytelling grounded in real life drives both scale and emotional connection.

The transformation also extended into new cultural territory in the form of a collaboration with fashion giant Uniqlo. The collaboration turned archival ST front pages into wearable fashion, reaching young and discerning audiences through a highly resonant medium. It was an act that said something large: ST was no longer just reporting on culture, but actively participating in it.

Key Takeaway

ST's ability to humanise a story and translate a brand's purpose into content that resonates emotionally with local audiences is a capability that extends well beyond its own transformation. Brands can partner with ST to co-create purpose-led content that connects in the same way.

Rebuilding the Digital Experience

Alongside content, ST undertook a full-scale transformation of its digital infrastructure. A redesigned app and website introduced a faster, cleaner, and more personalised experience, powered by AI-driven discovery tools and customised MyST+ newsfeeds tailored to individual reader behaviour.

The results were immediate and significant across the board.

  • User adoption reached 80% almost instantly
  • Average monthly installs exceeded 26,000
  • Paid acquisition over-performed by 132.8%.

Key Takeaway

A modernised ST platform means higher ad viewability, better audience segmentation, and increased dwell time. Advertisers benefit from a premium, high-performance environment that keeps users returning daily and engages them more deeply when they do.

Bringing the Brand Into the Community

Perhaps the most visible dimension of the transformation was the one that happened offline.

The "Heartbeats and Headlines" travelling exhibition brought ST's story to life across high-traffic locations including Jewel, Westgate, and Raffles City, drawing over 75,000 visitors and generating more than 14,700 redemptions of ST180 limited edition merchandise.

Strategic social amplification further extended this reach, delivering 22.1 million impressions and giving advertisers access to a high-visibility, community-centric platform that worked across both physical and digital environments.

The exhibition launch was marked by a high-profile anniversary dinner attended by Guest-of-Honour Lawrence Wong (who also delivered a rousing speech), alongside approximately 200 guests including government officials, corporate partners, advertisers, and industry leaders. This was ST announcing clearly and confidently that it is building for what comes next.

ST further deepened its community presence through Conversations with ST, a series of six sessions attended by more than 700 people, and Podcasts Live, which drew nearly 500 attendees. These formats gave the brand a face and a voice beyond the page, creating genuine dialogue with audiences rather than one-way broadcast.

For younger audiences, "What's the News?", a competitive current affairs programme for ages 15-19, brought ST directly to over 10,000 youths. A total of 17 events and activations contributed to meaningful awareness and engagement among Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences through gamification and education.

Key Takeaway

This dimension of the transformation is particularly instructive. It provides a clear blueprint for sponsored thought leadership, as brands can co-host live dialogues to associate themselves with trust, expertise, and transparency. It also demonstrates SPH Media's experiential marketing capabilities: the ability to create physical brand moments that capture footfall, drive recall, and extend well beyond a page or a screen for generations of consumers.

The Impact: A Brand Repositioned at Scale

Together, ST180 delivered a measurable and significant transformation in how ST is perceived and engaged with.

  • Awareness of ST turning 180 rose from 23% to 49%
  • Positive brand perception grew from 45% to 58%
  • Likelihood to follow ST increased from 36% to 46%

These are not vanity metrics, but a genuine intent by ST to engage its audiences. More importantly, ST successfully repositioned itself as a modern, trusted, community-centric platform.

As our newspaper of record, you’ve not only reported the events of our time, you’ve also captured the spirit of every generation — our hopes, our fears, our aspirations. And you have never stood still. You’ve embraced change and innovation, experimenting with new formats and technologies, adopting digital tools and online platforms, and rethinking how stories are told.

And so The Straits Times has become more than just a newspaper. You are a trusted voice for Singapore explaining the issues of the day, helping us make sense of a complex world, connecting Singaporeans to global developments, and carrying Singapore’s perspectives beyond our shores.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong

ST180 is not a one-off milestone, but the foundation of an ongoing model and one of the clearest demonstrations of holistic campaign execution. For brands looking to build credibility, relevance, and lasting connection across a broad and diverse audience base, this is incredibly valuable.

The ability to humanise stories, build communities, modernise digital experiences, and create physical moments that resonate are not capabilities ST developed for its anniversary and then set aside.

They are the capabilities that now define how ST, and by extension SPH Media, operates. Instead of a media house purely for news, SPH Media has evolved into Singapore's largest, most trusted, and most awarded media ecosystem, offering:

  • Purpose-led storytelling at scale
  • Combined physical and digital environment that drives deeper engagement
  • Integrated touchpoints across content, experience, and community
  • Direct access to multi-generational audiences that matter most for long-term brand growth
