SPH Media Journalism Scholarship

About the SPH Media Journalism Scholarship

Scholarship Details

Eligibility Criteria

  • Strong academic records in Secondary School / Institute of Technical Education / Polytechnic / Junior College / International Baccalaureate
  • Strong leadership qualities as demonstrated in Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) and National Service (if applicable)
  • Keen interest in news and current affairs
  • Strong communication and written language skills 
  • Strong presence on social media platforms or enjoy creating engaging multimedia content will be an advantage
  • Singapore citizen or Singapore permanent resident*
    *Malaysian citizens with an interest to pursue a career with the Chinese Media Group (CMG) can be considered

Academic Criteria

Full Term Scholarship
(Awarded to pre-university students, covering the entire duration of an undergraduate programme)
Mid Term Scholarship
(Awarded to current university students, covering the remaining years of their undergraduate programme)
GCE A-levels; or
International Baccalaureate; or
NUS High School Diploma; or
Polytechnic Diploma; or
Other high school diplomas or equivalent.

You may apply prior to receiving your final examination results.

At least one semester of university results.

Scholarship Obligation
SPH Media Journalism Scholarship recipients would be required to serve a bond with SPH Media.

The actual bond period depends on the university enrolled in, the course of study, and the number of years sponsored.

SPH Media - Temasek Foundation Scholarship


About the SPH Media - Temasek Foundation Journalism Scholarship
SPH Media and Temasek Foundation share an interest in building up a core group of talented journalists with knowledge of Singapore and the region. We invite young people with an interest in pursuing journalism as a career to apply for a bond-free scholarship aimed at developing news media professionals, to secure the future of credible journalism as a public good.


Scholarship Details

Eligibility Criteria 

The SPH Media-Temasek Foundation Scholarship is open to Singaporean/ASEAN youths who are 1) commencing full-time undergraduate studies in 2026 OR 2) currently pursuing full-time undergraduate degrees at either of the following institutions:

1. Nanyang Technological University

  • Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information
  • Public Policy and Global Affairs

2. National University of Singapore 

  • Department of Communications and New Media
  • Economics and Data Science
  • Political Science

Requirements

  • Excellent academic record, including A-level (or equivalent) results and be on track for graduation with at least a CGPA of 4.0 (for applicants who are currently pursuing full-time degrees)
  • Good CCA and / or NS record
  • Interest in news and current affairs
  • Enrolment in journalism and/or multimedia content creation modules

Tamil Media Scholarship

The Tamil Media Scholarship, offered by SPH Media and supported by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI), provides a unique opportunity for young individuals committed to shaping the future of Tamil media. Designed to nurture the next generation of journalists, this scholarship supports those who are passionate to advance the Tamil language within the media landscape.

With the Tamil Media Scholarship, you’ll help shape the conversation and lead the future of Tamil journalism, ensuring the language thrives across dynamic media platforms.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
  • Strong proficiency in the Tamil language
  • Strong academic record in Junior College /  Polytechnic / International Baccalaureate, or other equivalent qualifications
  • A genuine interest in news, current affairs, and media
  • Strong communication and written language skills
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) and National Service (if applicable)

Scholarship Obligation
Upon graduation, Tamil Media Scholarship recipients will be required to serve a bond with SPH Media. The bond length depends on the university and the course of study enrolled in.

  • Scholars will complete a secondment with MDDI’s Translation Department (TD) during the first two years of their bond period.
  • Following the secondment, scholars will return to SPH Media to serve the remaining bond period within the Tamil Murasu newsroom or other relevant departments, based on business needs and individual career aspirations.

1. Who can apply to the SPH Media scholarships?

The SPH Media Journalism Scholarship is open to all Singapore citizens or Singapore permanent residents who are curious, persistent, and passionate about uncovering the truth, with a keen interest in news and current affairs. 

The SPH Media-Temasek Foundation Scholarship is open to all Singaporean, Singaporean Permanent Residents and ASEAN nationales. 

Applicants must be commencing full-time undergraduate studies in 2025 or currently pursuing full-time undergraduate degrees at one of the following Schools:

2. What is the difference between the SPH Media Journalism Scholarship and the SPH Media -Temasek Foundation scholarship? 

The SPH Media Journalism Scholarship is fully sponsored by SPH Media while the SPH Media-Temasek Foundation Scholarship is co-funded by Temasek Foundation. Please refer to the table below for details.

3. What is the difference between a Full-Term and a Mid-Term Scholarship ?

Full-Term Scholarships are for applicants who are not currently enrolled in any university programmes. Applicants must be submitting university applications with the intention of commencing an undergraduate degree in August 2025.

Mid-Term Scholarships are for applicants who are currently enrolled in a degree programme and have completed at least one semester. Application must be made before the final year of undergraduate studies.

4. How do I know if I have been shortlisted for the next stage of selection?

All shortlisted candidates will be notified via email. Please monitor the junk mailbox so as to avoid missing our notifications. 
We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified at each stage of the selection process. 

5. Can I apply if I am currently in my last year of university?

Unfortunately we do not accept applications from final year university students. Applications for the Mid-Term Scholarship must be submitted before the start of the final year of studies.

6. Can I apply before the release of my A Level results? 

Yes, applications can be submitted before the release of A-Level results. Applicants may submit the Prelim results as part of the application. Shortlisted candidates will be required to provide their A-Level results after the release of results. 

7. If I’m going for my National Service (NS), do I apply after I have received my GCE 'A' Level results or after I have completed NS?

Male applicants can apply before serving NS, we will hold the application and continue with the selection process after the completion of NS should the applicant be shortlisted.  

8. What University course does the SPH Media Journalism Scholarship support?

All fields of study, except medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, architecture, or law.

9. Is there a list of approved universities that I should apply to? 

The undergraduate scholarships are applicable to courses at renowned overseas universities and six local universities, namely National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore Institute of Technology and Singapore University of Social Sciences.

10. I am a Part-Time University student, can I apply to the SPH Media Scholarships?

We regret to inform that all our scholarships are open to Full-Time students only (for both Full-Term and Mid-Term applicants)

11. What will the scholars’ career development be like? 

Scholars in SPH Media can evolve through diverse career paths by building expertise, maintaining versatility, and adapting to the ever-changing media landscape, particularly with digital transformation and data-driven journalism. 

Scholars will have the opportunity to be rotated to different roles within the newsroom. Learning interventions are curated by the Media Academy to support the development of their career both vertically and laterally.  

12. How long is the bond period?

Successful applicants are expected to serve a bond in SPH Media. 

  • Four (4) years for Full-Term local scholarship 
  • Six (6) years for Full-Term overseas scholarship
  • For Mid-Term scholarship, the number of years of bond depends on the number of years sponsored. e.g. For an applicant who applied at Year 2, he/she has to serve two (2) years of bond.

  • Editorial Internships are offered for English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil media.
  • Non-editorial Internships are offered for Technology, Consumer Division, Lifestyle and Media Group
